Apex has tornado alerts by phone but many residents do not know about this service

Residents of Apex, NC had witnessed the terrible tornadoes that passed through the area recently, causing massive amounts of damage to local communities.  The town of Apex is now paying for a service that many town residents don’t even know exists.  Apex pays about $15,000 per year for an early notification service whenever dangerous weather is nearby.

A private company, Code Red provides the service which calls your home, mobile or office phone to alert you when dangerous weather is close to your neighborhood.  Only residents in the storm’s current path are notified by phone.

Many Apex and Holly Springs residents wonder why they don’t hear the loud sirens when a tornado is approaching.  The sirens have a completely different purpose.  The Harris Nuclear Power Plant uses those sirens to warn nearby residents of problems at the nuclear plant only, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Of the 39,000 people that live in Apex, 18,000 are already signed up for this service to receive alerts through Code Red, so if you live in Apex, make sure you opt in to begin receiving your notifications!
